DBS Checks for Security Guards

Are you working for a security business supplying bodyguards, doormen, or bouncers? If so, you can rely on eSafeguarding as a leading provider of DBS security checks. We implement safe, speedy and secure DBS checks on potential and current security staff.

What DBS Security Check Will You Need for Security Roles?

UK security guards are regulated by the Security Industry Authority (SIA). The SIA will require the completion of a standard DBS check (formerly known as CRB checks) for you to obtain a licence to work as a security guard in public and private capacities.

If you are a director of a company, a partner of a firm, or a manager or supervisor of employees where your business supplies other organisations with security operatives as part of a contract for services, you will also need an SIA licence, so will require a Standard Level DBS check.

You do not usually need an SIA licence if you will be working ‘in-house’. This is when you are employed directly by the company that uses your services – for example, your employer is a supermarket and you work as a security guard in one of their shops.

There are two licensable activities where you must have an SIA licence regardless of whether you work in-house or not. These are:

Vehicle immobilising – this only applies in Northern Ireland

Security Guards that Will Require an Enhanced Level DBS Check

Some security guards may need an Enhanced Level DBS check due to their place of work and due to them being in regular contact with children or vulnerable adults.

Some examples of this are:

Security guards who work in a high security psychiatric hospital

Security guards working in a care home which is exclusively or mainly for adults, where the individual has the opportunity to have contact with the adults resident at that care home. This only applies when they are working there for more than three days in any 30-day period, or if they ever work there overnight (between 2 am and 6 am)

Security guards working in any of the places listed in the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006 as specified establishments, where the individual has the opportunity to have contact with the children in the establishment. This only applies when they are working there for more than three days in any 30-day period, or if they ever work there overnight (between 2 am and 6 am)

Specified establishments referred to are:

  1. Schools and other educational institutions which are exclusively or mainly for the provision of full-time education to children

  2. Nurseries and other establishments which are exclusively or mainly for the provision of nursery education

  3. A hospital which is exclusively or mainly for the reception and treatment of children in Wales only

  4. Young offenders institutions which are exclusively or mainly for the detention of children

  5. A children’s centre

  6. Children’s homes
