What Type of DBS Check Do You Need for Driving and Transport?

There are various roles within the driving and transport industry that would require Enhanced Level DBS checks. This is due to the fact that they are often responsible for transporting the most vulnerable members of society.

Many councils have passenger transport contracts, including but not limited to Special Education Needs (SEN) transport, Home to School transport, Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) transport and Adult Services transport. These would all require a suitable DBS check.

Taxi Drivers and Private Hire Vehicle Drivers

If you are applying for a taxi driver licence or private hire vehicle licence, you will require a taxi driver DBS check, and specifically you will need an Enhanced DBS Check with a check of both the Adult’s and Children’s Barred List Check. Individuals cannot request this level of check on themselves, so this will need to be applied for via your licensing authority.

School Bus Drivers

A bus driver DBS check is necessary for school bus drivers transporting children to and from school, and they will be eligible for an Enhanced Level DBS Check (formerly known as a CRB check). If you transport children for more than three days in any 30-day period, you will also require a check of the children’s barred list.

Adult Transport

Individuals who transport adults who need to be conveyed due to various factors such as age, illness or disability to or from anywhere they would be receiving health care, personal care or social work would require an Enhanced DBS check with a check of the adult’s barred list. This includes care home drivers, hospital porters, patient transport service drivers and assistants. An example of this would be patient transport of the elderly to hospital appointments.
